Meet Our Teachers
Vanessa Ludwig – Kindergarten
Hello! I’m the kinderleben teacher at Gillingham. This is the fourth year teaching at the school, although I have 8 years of teaching experience. I obtained my elementary degree from Kutztown University with a concentration in reading. I also have a Master’s Degree in educational strategies and techniques. I love teaching the little ones because each day is an adventure! When I’m not teaching I love to travel and do things outside. My goal is to travel to Africa; however, my favorite place to be would be reading a book on the beach!
Morgan Schreckengost- 1st & 2nd Grade
Hello! My name is Morgan Schreckengost, but most students choose to call me “Mr. Schreck” for short. I am the first and second grade teacher at Gillingham Charter School. I was born and raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania–specifically the town of Lititz. I received my B.S. in Elementary Education from Mansfield University in 2013. I began my career working in summer camp settings as a camp counselor and eventually, as Assistant Camp Director at YMCA Camp Kresge in the Poconos. I then decided to focus more on my teaching career and worked as a substitute teacher. I then spent a year teaching fifth grade and a year teaching kindergarten in a private program.
In my free time, I obsess over everything and anything Star Wars related. I spend time with close friends and enjoy spending time with my family–especially my six and one year old nephews. I was drawn to the philosophy, culture, and practices at Gillingham and hope to provide students with the highest quality education possible. I believe in Gillingham Charter and look forward to forming meaningful connections with students and families!
Julia Schmoltze – 1st & 2nd Grades
This will be my third year teaching here at Gillingham. I graduated from Kutztown University in 2013 with a degree in Early Childhood Education. When I am not spending my time at Gillingham, I love being with my family, friends, and of course my dog!
Olivia Groody – 3rd & 4th Grades
My name is Olivia Groody, and I am a 2012 graduate of Kutztown University. This is my fifth year with Gillingham Charter School and my fourth year teaching 3rd and 4th grade. I was born and raised in Schuylkill County and am proud to continue working here. I look forward to pursuing my master’s degree this winter back at Kutztown. I love reading, writing, and spending as much time as I can with family, friends, and my pets!
Karen Shanoskie – 3rd & 4th Grades
I graduated from Penn State University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Social and Behavioral Sciences. My teaching career spans more than 30 years. Most of my teaching years were spent at Good Shepherd Catholic School in Minersville. Upon the closure of that school, I experienced two years of substituting in our local public schools. Then, when Gillingham Charter School came into fruition, I was blessed to come on board and I have been teaching third and fourth graders here since its inception. For me, education is a life-long endeavor. At Gillingham, I am a learner as well as a teacher. I love learning about our artists, composers, poets and their works. I love that we are unique and offer handwork and outdoor studies, such as nature study. Reading has always been one of my passions. I have been a member of my Book Club for the past several years. My girlfriends and I gather monthly for dinner and discuss our book. I also enjoy spending time with my family, going to the beach, and relaxing at our cabin in the woods. My husband, Rick, and I reside in Lake Wynonah.
Matt Kercher – 5th and 6th Grades
This is my third year at Gillingham Charter School, and I teach grades 5 and 6. I am also the head coach of our varsity archery team. I graduated from Penn State University Berks Campus in 2013. Outside of school, archery is a hobby of mine and I spend a lot of time outdoors. Music is another of my many interests, and I play the guitar regularly. I currently live in the Reading area.
Monica Meza – 5th & 6th grade
My name is Monica Meza. I have been with Gillingham for five years, this being my third year teaching in fifth and sixth grades. I received my degree in elementary education from Penn State University and have enjoyed teaching various grade levels and subjects, including two years working with students having English as a Second Language in grades K-12. When I’m not working, I enjoy kayaking, gardening, lounging on my porch, listening to music, and spending time with my friends and family.
Kara Stalter – Reading Specialist (K-12)
This is my fifth year at Gillingham, and I serve as the school Reading Specialist, as well as the Assessment/Title I Coordinator. Although I reside in Berks County, working here in Pottsville is where I learn to live, not just to teach. I wholeheartedly believe in this philosophy of education, having seen first-hand the growth of our students. I finished my Master’s degree from Kutztown University in July of 2016 and am thrilled to be a Reading Specialist. When I am not at Gillingham working with the children and teachers, I most enjoy playing the piano and guitar, singing, taking walks, playing games, writing, and reading missionary stories. Feel free to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Carrie Miller – Art Teacher
I am the K-12 art teacher, as well as the yearbook advisor. Having received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1997, I am currently a graduate student at Kutztown University. I enjoy being a mom, biking, drawing, gardening, reading, shopping and watching movies!
This is my second year at Gillingham which I am the K-12th health and physical education teacher as well as the boy’s basketball coach. This year I will also take on the role of being the new athletic director. I received my bachelor’s degree from Marywood University in 2014. Prior to getting a health and physical education degree I was the boys basketball coach at G.A.R. Memorial High School in Wilkes Barre for 8 years, currently where I live. I love being active and playing sports while helping others stay physically active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Brent Potteiger – Latin Teacher
This is my third year at Gillingham, teaching the Latin language using the methods of TPR (Total Physical Response) and TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). After graduating from Moravian College with a degree in the classics, I initially worked for nonprofit organizations before pursuing a teaching career. Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my wife and six sons, reading and going for walks.
Preston Charlesworth- Music Director
Hello! My name is Preston Charlesworth, and this is my second year at Gillingham as the K-12 General Music teacher and Director of Choirs. I graduated in 2015 from Slippery Rock University with a degree in Music Education. My interests outside of school involve playing the tuba, reading books of all sorts, attempting to cook without burning the house down, and watching terrible movies on the Syfy channel. I currently reside in Myerstown, PA, with my wife, also a music teacher, and our two cats Hugo and Chessa.
