Meet Our Teachers
Vanessa Ludwig – Kindergarten
I’m the kinderleben teacher at Gillingham! I have 9 years of teaching experience, 5 of which have been at Gillingham. I obtained my elementary degree from Kutztown University, with a concentration in reading. I also have a Master’s Degree in educational strategies and techniques, which was obtained from Wilkes University. I love teaching the little ones because each day is an adventure! When I’m not teaching I love to travel. This summer I spend five weeks exploring Australia. My goal is to continue to travel to different countries around the world in order to experience as much culture and diversity as I can! When I am not traveling I love to stay busy by bike riding, running, going on hikes, and walking my dog.
Morgan Schreckengost- 1st & 2nd Grade
Hello! My name is Morgan Schreckengost, but most students choose to call me “Mr. Schreck” for short. I am the first and second grade teacher at Gillingham Charter School. I was born and raised in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania–specifically the town of Lititz. I received my B.S. in Elementary Education from Mansfield University in 2013. I began my career working in summer camp settings as a camp counselor and eventually, as Assistant Camp Director at YMCA Camp Kresge in the Poconos. I then decided to focus more on my teaching career and worked as a substitute teacher. I then spent a year teaching fifth grade and a year teaching kindergarten in a private program.
In my free time, I obsess over everything and anything Star Wars related. I spend time with close friends and enjoy spending time with my family–especially my six and one year old nephews. I was drawn to the philosophy, culture, and practices at Gillingham and hope to provide students with the highest quality education possible. I believe in Gillingham Charter and look forward to forming meaningful connections with students and families!
Julia Schmoltze – 1st & 2nd Grades
This will be my fourth year here at Gillingham, and I couldn’t have picked a better school to spend the past four years! I graduated from Kutztown University in 2013 with a degree in Early Childhood Education. I have a year old Dachshund named Willow, love Netflix, books, and the outdoors!
Olivia Groody – 3rd & 4th Grades
Hello! My name is Olivia Groody and I am the 4th grade teacher here at Gillingham. I am a proud Schuylkill County native, and a 2012 graduate of Kutztown University with a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education K-6 and a concentration in English. I am so excited to be starting my 6th year at Gillingham Charter School, and my 5th year full time teaching! I am currently working towards my master’s degree to become a Reading Specialist back at Kutztown. In my free time, I love reading, going on walks with my dog, spending time with friends and family, and planning for my upcoming wedding!
Karen Shanoskie – 3rd & 4th Grades
My name is Mrs. Karen Shanoskie. I graduated from Penn State University and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Social and Behavioral Sciences. My teaching career spans more than 30 years. Most of my teaching years were spent at Good Shepherd Catholic School in Minersville. Upon the closure of that school, I experienced two years of substituting in our local public schools. Then, when Gillingham Charter School came into fruition, I was blessed to come on board and I have been teaching third and fourth graders here since its inception. For me, education is a life-long endeavor. At Gillingham, I am a learner as well as a teacher. I love learning about our artists, composers, poets and their works. I love that we are unique and offer handwork and outdoor studies, such as nature study. Reading has always been one of my passions. I have been a member of my Book Club for the past several years. My girlfriends and I gather monthly for dinner and discuss our book. I also enjoy spending time with my family, going to the beach, and relaxing at our cabin in the woods. My husband, Rick, and I reside in Lake Wynonah.
Matt Kercher – 5th and 6th Grades
I am Mr. Kercher and this is my 4th year as a 5th and 6th grade teacher at Gillingham Charter School. I am also the head coach for our varsity archery team. I live in Reading. I am huge Philadelphia sports fan and love to spend time with my friends, family, and my dog Lincoln.
Monica Meza – 5th & 6th grade
My name is Monica Meza. I have been with Gillingham for five years, this being my third year teaching in fifth and sixth grades. I received my degree in elementary education from Penn State University and have enjoyed teaching various grade levels and subjects, including two years working with students having English as a Second Language in grades K-12. When I’m not working, I enjoy kayaking, gardening, lounging on my porch, listening to music, and spending time with my friends and family.
Kara Stalter – Reading Specialist (K-12)
This is my fifth year at Gillingham, and I serve as the school Reading Specialist, as well as the Assessment/Title I Coordinator. Although I reside in Berks County, working here in Pottsville is where I learn to live, not just to teach. I wholeheartedly believe in this philosophy of education, having seen first-hand the growth of our students. I finished my Master’s degree from Kutztown University in July of 2016 and am thrilled to be a Reading Specialist. When I am not at Gillingham working with the children and teachers, I most enjoy playing the piano and guitar, singing, taking walks, playing games, writing, and reading missionary stories. Feel free to contact me at email@example.com.
This is my second year at Gillingham which I am the K-12th health and physical education teacher as well as the boy’s basketball coach. This year I will also take on the role of being the new athletic director. I received my bachelor’s degree from Marywood University in 2014. Prior to getting a health and physical education degree I was the boys basketball coach at G.A.R. Memorial High School in Wilkes Barre for 8 years, currently where I live. I love being active and playing sports while helping others stay physically active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
Brent Potteiger – Latin Teacher
This is my third year at Gillingham, teaching the Latin language using the methods of TPR (Total Physical Response) and TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling). I have also taught classes in Shakespeare and philosophy. After graduating from Moravian College with a degree in the classics, I initially worked for nonprofit organizations before pursuing a teaching career. Outside of school I enjoy spending time with my wife and six sons, reading and going for walks.
